The first volume in the Cold War Berlin: An Island City series looks at the origins of the Cold War in the turbulent years following the Second World War. The German city of Berlin became central to the war of words and show of force that characterised this conflict. The first 'skirmish' took place in 1948, just three years after the end of the War, when Stalin blockaded the Western Allies' enclave in Berlin with the intention of forcing them out - the resulting Berlin Airlift demonstrated clearly the West's resolve to remain, and led to an embarrassing climb down for Joseph Stalin, the Soviet leader - this is also explored in Volume 1.

The next major crisis occurred in 1961 when the East Germans, with the full backing of their Soviet masters, sealed off West Berlin with the infamous Berlin Wall - Volume 2 in the series explores this pivotal event.

Volumes 3 looks closely at how the American garrison in Berlin, the biggest of the three Western Allies, went about keeping the peace, how they built a Military Government, and policed their sector of the divided city. Volume 4 looks at how the Americans planned to defend West Berlin, how they trained and equipped in their preparation for a war that thankfully never came. The Cold War Berlin: An Island City series is published by Helion, and available at the usual places - the links take you to helion.co.uk, but they are also available on Amazon, and direct from the author, signed if required.

Secrets of the Cold War, published by Pen & Sword History looks at the incredible world of espionage, when all sides gathered intelligence to give them an advantage of the opposition. The book explores the tradecraft and methods used, and outlines some of the famous (or infamous) stories, such as the Manhattan Project 'Atomic Spies', the Portland Spies, and BRIXMIS. Secrets of the Cold War is available from the publisher via the above link, at Amazon, and signed copies are available via the author.

Speaking of BRIXMIS, BRIXMIS and the Secret Cold War studies this little-known but highly successful British Cold War military unit based in West Berlin, who used an obscure 1946 agreement with the Soviets as justification to 'spy' in plain site on the Soviet and East German militaries inside East Germany. They operated under the radar for 46 years, bringing in invaluable intelligence to the MOD in London and NATO headquarters. BRIXMIS and the Secret Cold War is available from the publisher via the above link, at Amazon, and signed copies are available via the author.

Andrew's Cold War History Blog explores in more detail some of the extraordinary stories from this complex and dangerous period in our recent history.
